The book demonstrates that, in the late 19th to early 20th centuries, Darwinism and associated science strongly influenced celebrated Greek literary writers and other influential intellectuals. Ch. 2 is entitled "Darwin and Modern Greek Writers" (pp. 67-115). Special attention is paid to Emmanuel Roidis (pp. 76-87), Kostis Palamas (pp. 87-100), Nikos Kazantzakis (pp. 100-109), and Alexandros Papadiamantis (pp. 110-115); also to Kalliroi Parren (pp. 246-247, 265-268). There is a focus, as a case study, on the work of Grigorios Xenopoulos, who wrote prolifically through this period (pp. 203-290 and passim).
